How do I add backend keywords in Seller Central?
Adding backend keywords in Seller Central is a straightforward process once you know where to find the Keywords tab. The interface is not immediately obvious from the main inventory view, which is why many sellers either skip backend keywords entirely or complete them only partially. A correctly filled backend Search Terms field, combined with strong title and bullet point keywords, gives your listing its widest possible organic indexation footprint. Log in to your Amazon Seller Central account and navigate to Inventory, then select Manage All Inventory from the dropdown menu. Locate the product listing you want to add backend keywords to. On the right-hand side of the listing row, click the Edit button (or the dropdown arrow next to Edit and select Edit from the menu that appears). The listing edit page opens with a series of tabs across the top: Vital Info, Variations, Offer, Fulfillment, Compliance, Images, Description and Keywords. Click the Keywords tab. This tab contains all the backend keyword fields available for your listing. The primary field is Search Terms, which is where your main backend keyword content should go. Enter your keywords as space-separated words and phrases within the 250-byte limit. When you have filled all relevant fields, scroll to the bottom of the page and click Save and Finish to submit your changes. Amazon typically processes the update within 24 to 72 hours. The Search Terms field accepts up to 250 bytes of text. In practice this means approximately 200 to 250 characters for standard English text, though the byte count rather than the character count is the operative limit. Separate each keyword or phrase with a single space. Do not use commas, semicolons, quotes or any other punctuation between terms: spaces are all Amazon needs to distinguish one keyword from the next, and additional punctuation wastes bytes. Fill the field with words that do not already appear in your listing's title, bullets, brand name or description. Amazon indexes each word once regardless of which field it appears in, so repeating a word from your title in the Search Terms field provides no additional indexation benefit. The entire purpose of the Search Terms field is to extend your listing's keyword coverage into vocabulary that your visible fields cannot accommodate naturally. Use Keyword Hunters to identify which relevant keywords your listing is not yet indexed for, then use those terms to fill your 250-byte allowance. Beyond Search Terms, the Keywords tab contains several additional fields that also feed into Amazon's indexation: Subject Matter, Target Audience, Intended Use and Other Attributes (the exact fields shown depend on the product category). These fields are often left blank but they do contribute to indexation when filled. They are best used for terms that describe the product's audience, use context or subject matter in ways that the Search Terms field does not cover. For a bamboo toothbrush, Subject Matter might include 'oral care' and 'dental hygiene'. Target Audience might include 'eco-conscious adults' or 'sensitive gums'. Intended Use might include 'daily brushing' or 'travel'. These are descriptors that a shopper might use as search qualifiers but that may not fit naturally into the main Search Terms field without crowding out higher-value primary keywords. Fill each additional field with terms relevant to that specific category rather than repeating content from the Search Terms field. For sellers managing a large inventory, updating backend keywords individually through each listing's edit page is time-consuming. An alternative is to use a flat file bulk upload through Seller Central's Add Products via Upload tool. A flat file is a spreadsheet template downloaded from Seller Central that contains a column for Search Terms (and other backend fields) alongside all other listing attributes. You can update the Search Terms for multiple listings simultaneously, then upload the completed file to apply the changes in bulk. Flat file uploads are more efficient for large catalogues but require care: an incorrectly formatted file can overwrite existing listing data. Always download the correct category-specific template, fill only the fields you intend to update, and use the 'Update' partial update mode rather than 'Add' to avoid inadvertently clearing fields you have not filled in the upload file.
