How many keywords can I use on Amazon KDP?
Amazon KDP does not give you a single unlimited keyword field. It gives you a structured set of placements, each with its own character limit and purpose. Understanding the full keyword allowance, including every placement that contributes to Amazon's indexation of your book, is the foundation of an effective KDP discoverability strategy. KDP gives you seven backend keyword boxes, each accepting up to 50 characters including spaces. That is a total of 350 characters for hidden search terms. On top of that, Amazon also indexes your book title, subtitle, series name and description, all of which contribute to your keyword coverage without using any of the backend allowance. The combined indexation surface across all these placements means a well-optimised listing can rank for dozens of reader search terms. Most authors focus only on the 7 backend boxes and underestimate the keyword work their title and subtitle are already doing. The reverse is also true: some authors fill their title with keyword phrases and leave the backend boxes incomplete, missing 350 characters of additional discoverability. Both placements matter, and they should be planned together rather than in isolation. Amazon indexes content from several fields in your book's listing. Each field contributes to discoverability in slightly different ways, and each has a different character limit and level of reader visibility. The most common mistake authors make is repeating the same keywords across multiple fields. If your title already contains 'cosy mystery', adding it again in your backend keyword boxes wastes 12 characters that could be used for a different search term Amazon does not yet index your book for. Amazon only needs to see a keyword once to index your book for it. Plan your keyword placements as a complete strategy rather than treating each field independently. Start with your highest-priority keywords and place the most important ones in your title and subtitle where they also carry reader appeal. Use the backend boxes exclusively for terms that do not appear naturally in your visible listing. This approach extracts maximum indexation coverage from every character you have available. Three tools are available specifically for KDP authors and book sellers, each targeting a different part of the keyword research and placement process.
