How many keywords should I put in an Amazon ad group?
The number of keywords you should put in an Amazon ad group depends on relevance, budget and the control you need; there is no universally ideal count. For a small manual Sponsored Products test, 10 to 20 closely related keyword phrases can be a manageable starting point, not an Amazon rule or a performance guarantee. Start with phrases that describe the product accurately and share a shopper intent. For a foldable aluminium laptop stand, a focused set might cover folding laptop stand, portable laptop riser and adjustable laptop stand, provided the product really offers those features. Do not add tablet wall mount simply to increase the count. A small, tightly themed test is often easier to review than a large unfiltered list. Larger groups can also work when the keywords fit the same products and you have enough traffic and budget. No count guarantees that Amazon will distribute clicks evenly or that every target will receive useful evidence. In manual keyword targeting, the same phrase entered as broad, phrase and exact becomes three targets with different matching rules and potentially different bids. Ten phrases across all three types therefore create 30 targets. Keep that distinction clear when comparing keyword lists or planning a test. Automatic campaigns do not use a manual keyword list in the same way: Amazon selects eligible searches and product relationships. Manual product targeting uses ASIN or category targets instead. A recommendation about keyword count should not be applied mechanically to either of those setups. Add relevant phrases when search term evidence or research reveals useful coverage gaps. Review target delivery, spend and orders first. A keyword with no clicks has not collected the same evidence as one with substantial spend and no orders, so do not judge them by the same simple rule. Split groups when the advertised products, search themes or reporting needs differ meaningfully. If you need an independent budget, use a separate campaign: Sponsored Products ad groups within a campaign share its budget. One keyword per group is an optional management choice, not a universal requirement, and can create unnecessary complexity.
There is no ideal keyword count for every Amazon ad group. Start with a focused relevant set, then expand using budget and search-term evidence.
